New Article: Intersectionality in the UPR of Sudan

The Women's Studies International Forum has recently published an article exploring how recommendations addressing women’s rights in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) integrate an intersectional approach.  Sudan served as the case study for this research entitled “Intersectionality and the universal periodic review: A case study of Sudan's women's rights recommendations”.

“While this study is limited to Sudan, some areas of further research include replicating this study to examine the UPR women's rights recommendations for other states to ascertain how an intersectional lens has been incorporated” affirms Rebecca Yemo, author of the article and Doctoral Candidate of the McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

UPR Info’s database of recommendations has been used as primary source for collecting most of the data on the recommendations made to Sudan. According to the analysis made by the author, although there is a limited number of recommendations addressing intersectionality linked to women’s rights, data shows an incremental trend highlighting this approach.

“This is a significant finding because it could indicate that the states that participate in the UPR process are increasingly beginning to consider how various categories or groups of women are multiply marginalized in accessing protection for women's rights”.
